Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Reduction of frown lines, forhead lines and crows feet by injection.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show the deeper these lines and wrinkles are likely to be. With this non surgical procedure you do not have to show these lines anymore.
This procedure is carried out by our own doctor or Nurse at Newlife Laser Clinic.
Background
This treatment has been used for years to treat muscular problems including eye deviation, eyelid spasm as well as facial spasms. Ageing is associated with the development of wrinkles and furrows on the face. These lines may develop as a result of weakened dermal collagen from sun exposure and gravity, or due to facial muscle action on the skin.
Although this treatment is predominantly used on the under fifty age group this does not preclude those over fifty from receiving treatment. This will be ascertained at first consultation.
The treatment reversibly freezes or paralyses muscles. Therefore, it may be used to treat facial lines caused primarily by the action of the facial muscles on the skin. The ideal areas to treat are those wrinkles caused by muscles that have no significant function. Examples include: the deep crease between the eyebrows, crows feet and forehead lines.
Injection into frown lines has shown to be very successful. Good results may be obtained after a single injection and may last up to six months. The effect of the injection may take up to5-7 days to work. Some patients with very powerful muscles may not see a complete paralysis of the targeted area, but subsequent injections will further weaken them.
Do the Injections Hurt?
Most patients find the injections only cause mild, temporary discomfort.
Do’s and Don’ts after Treatment
: Do exercise muscles excessively for 2 hours.
: Do not massage.
: Do not lie down for 4 hours.
: Any bruising will settle.
How will I Look After Treatment?
Immediately after the injections there may be a mild swelling which usually subsides within 24-48 hours. Application of ice after treatment will help to reduce swelling.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects of this treatment are rare. Occasionally, a temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid may occur, but only lasts a few weeks. Rarely, a transient numbness may develop in the treated area, or a temporary weakness of the muscles moving the eye may cause double vision but this is short lived. Patients very unusually develop antibodies or allergies to the treatment. An extremely rare side- effect may be generalised weakness and fatigue. In one study less than 3% of the patients experienced any of these complications. Mild bruising may occur.
If you are prone to cold sores at the injection site, treatment may bring out an eruption. Finally, any injection carries a small risk of infection.
If you are pregnant or breast feeding, the treatment is not recommended and certain antibiotics should not be taken at the same time as treatments.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Repeat treatments are usually needed every 3-4 months over a 12 month period. Clinical trials report that some patients who have had treatments over 12 months, are only requiring further treatments once or twice per year. Please note it takes 5 to 7 days for the treatment to work.
Alternatives to Botox
Botox is the only treatment available that tackles the cause of dynamic lines by relaxing the muscles that make the skin to wrinkle.
Other measures like filling agents (Collagen, Restylane etc) that are injected just below the surface of the skin aim to temporarily fill out the lines or wrinkles.
Certain surgical procedures to the various parts of the face can also help to improve lines.
Aim of Treatment with Botox is for Improvement, NOT For Perfection
The aim of facial treatment with Botox is to improve and reduce dynamic expression wrinkles. Static wrinkles due to skin thinning, age, sun damage etc. will not be improved significantly by Botox. Other types of treatment will be recommended.
